The song basically depicts a Romantic Tragedy and Revolves around 2 lovers, Mahiwal and Sohni. Kande Utte means The terrain connecting the river or you can say, Bank of the River, Chenab in this case.
So, the story goes with the Mahiwal leaving everything for her and working for Sohni’s father, who is a potter by profession and marries his daughter to another daughter. Despite being married, Sohni would cross Chenab using a pot, of course big enough to hold her weight, and meet Mahiwal living across the stream. It so happens that one day, Sohni’s sister-in-law would notice her activities and replace the pot with an unbaked one. If you’ve ever held an unbaked pot or even seen it closely, you would notice it’s too porous and would easily break or melt. Since the pot this time was unbaked, it melted and Sohni drowns in the river. Mahiwal jumps in the river to save her somehow but is caught in heavy currents of Chenab and drowns too.
