| raat yun dil mein teri khoyi hui yaad aayi |
Last night, your lost memory came to my heart, |
| jaise veerane mein chupke se bahaar aa jaye |
As if spring secretly arrives in the wilderness. |
| jaise sehraon mein haule se chale baad e naseem |
As if a gentle breeze flows in the desert. |
| jaise beemaar ko bewajah karaar aa jaaye |
As if a patient finds peace without reason. |
| kitne badal gaye hain woh halaat ki tarah |
How much they have changed, like the circumstances. |
| jab bhi mile hain pehli mulakaat ki tarah |
Whenever they meet, it feels like the first meeting. |
| teri jafa kahun ke inayat kahoon isse |
Should I call it your cruelty or your favor? |
| gham bhi mila mujhe kisi saugaat ki tarah |
Even sorrow felt like a gift to me. |
| dil mein ghamon ki aag bhadakne lagi to hum |
When the fire of sorrow blazed in the heart, |
| roye hain phoot phoot ke barsaat ki tarah |
I wept uncontrollably, like heavy rain. |
| hum kya kisi ke husn ka sadka utaarte |
How could we offer tribute to anyone’s beauty? |
| ik zindagi mili hai wo khairaat ki tarah |
The life we’ve received feels like charity. |
| bujhi hui shama ka dhuan hoon |
I am the smoke of an extinguished candle, |
| aur apne markaz ko ja raha hoon |
And I am heading toward my origin. |
| ke dil ki hasrat mit chuki hai |
My heart doesn't have wishes anymore |
| ab apni hasti mita raha hoon |
now i am destroying my existence. |
| teri hi surat ke dekhne ko |
To gaze upon your face, |
| buton ki tasveeren la raha hoon |
I am getting images of idols |
| ke khoobiyan sabki jama karke |
Gathering everyone’s virtues, |
| tera tasawwur jama raha hoon |
I am creating an image of you. |
| kafan mein khud ko chhupa liya hai |
I have shrouded myself in a coffin, |
| ke tujh ko parde ki ho na zehmat |
So that you are not burdened by veils. |
| naqaab apne liye banakar |
By making a veil for myself, |
| hijaab tera utha raha hoon |
I am lifting your veil. |
| udhar wo ghar se nikal pade hain |
There, they have left their house, |
| idhar mera dam nikal raha hai |
Here, I am losing my breath. |
| ilahi kaisi hai ye qayamat |
Oh God, what kind of calamity is this? |
| wo aa rahe hain main ja raha hoon |
They are coming while I am departing. |
| muhabbat insaan ki hai fitrat |
Love is the nature of humankind, |
| kahaan hai ibkan e tark e ulfat |
where is the possibility of leaving love, |
| wo aur bhi yaad aa rahe hain |
They come to mind even more, |
| main unko jitna bhula raha hoon |
The more I try to forget them. |
| roz kehta hoon bhool jaun unhein |
Every day, I tell myself to forget them, |
| roz ye baat bhool jata hoon main |
But every day, I forget this resolve. |
| nahin aati to unki yaad barson tak nahin aati |
For years, their memory doesn’t come to me, |
| lekin jab yaad aate hain to aksar yaad aate hain |
But when they do, they often come to mind. |
| zubaan pe labdaik har nafas mein |
"Here I am," on my lips with every breath, |
| jabeen pe sajda hai har kadam pe |
A bow on my forehead with every step. |
| yun ja raha butkade ko naatik |
Thus, I proceed to the temple, eloquently, |
| ke jaise kaabe ko ja raha hoon |
As if I am going to the Kaaba. |
