| Khiza ke dor main ahd-e-bahar leta ho Koi bhi waqt ho hans kar ghuzaar leta ho |
In the season of autumn, I embrace the promise of spring, whatever the time, I live it with a smile. |
Taking color from flowers and light from stars, I sketch the beloved's beauty. |
| Main fasane talaash karta ho Aap unwaan dhond kar lai |
I seek tales, you bring me titles. |
Let us search the abode of the ascetics, and bring back a few true souls. |
| Yea jo dewnay sa dou chaar nazar atay hain In main kuch Shaib-e-Asrar nazar atay hain |
These few mad souls we see, some carry a hint of mystery. |
| Teri mehfil ka bharum rakhtay hain sou jatay hain Warna yea log tou bedar nazar attay hain |
They maintain the decorum of your gathering and then doze, else they would appear ever awake. |
| Meray daman main tou kantoon ka siwa kuch bhi nahi App phoolon ka kharidar nazar attay hain |
My garment holds nothing but thorns, while you seem to seek only flowers. |
| Hashar main kon Ghawhe meri dega Sagir Sab tumharay he tarf daar nazar attay hain |
Who will testify for me on Judgement Day, Sagir? All seem to stand by your side. |
| Aaj rothe hue saajna ko bhut yaad kya Apne ujre hue gulshan ko bhut yaad kya |
Today I deeply remember the estranged beloved, and the ruin of my blooming garden. |
| Jub kabhi gardish-e-taqdeer ne ghera hain hame Geso-e-yaar ki uljhan ko bhut yaad kya |
Whenever fate’s hardships surround me, I remember the tangled locks of my beloved. |
| Aaj tote hue sapno ki bhut yaad aaye Aaj bete hue sawaan ko bhut yaad kya |
Today, I recall my broken dreams, and the passing monsoon. |
| Shama ki jot pe jalte hue parwaano ne Ek tere shola-e-daaman ko bhut yaad kya |
The moths burning in the flame of the candle remind me of the blaze of your robe's hem. |
| Aye dil-e-beqaraar chup hoja Ja chuki hain bahar chup hoja |
Oh restless heart, be silent, spring has passed, be quiet. |
| Ab na aye ge rothne waale Deeda-e-ashkbaar chup hoja |
Those who left in anger will not return, so tearful eyes, be still. |
| Choot jati hian phool se khusbo Rooth jate hain yaar chup hoja |
Scents fade from flowers, lovers part, so be silent. |
| Hum faqeero ka is zaamane main Kon hain gum gusaar chup hoja |
In this world, who will share the grief of us poor wanderers? Be quiet. |
Even a melody's beat, dear Sagir, can break the strings, so be silent. |
| Yun bazm-e-zindagi main ujaala kare ge hum Tum ko bithaa ke saamne sajda kare ge hum |
In the gathering of life, we shall bring light, seating you before us, we shall bow in reverence. |
We reached their door, but don’t ask what we would do there. |
| Sar jhukana agar jurum hoga Hum nighon say sajda karay gain |
If bowing the head is deemed a crime, we shall bow with our eyes. |
I must honor your words, O cup bearer, and not let my grace be shamed. |
Whether or not you offer the cup today, we shall greet the morning in the tavern. |
| Iss taraf apna daman jalay gaa Os taraf un ke mehfil sajjay ge |
On this side, my garment will burn, on that side, their gathering will flourish. |
| Hum andheray ko ghar main boula kar On ka ghar main ujala karay gay |
We shall invite darkness into our home and bring light to theirs. |
Do not comfort us with false assurances, do not add more grief to our sorrow. |
| Jiss say ankhon main ajjay ansu Wo khushi lakay hum kya karay gay |
What will we do with happiness that brings tears to our eyes? |
| Doston ki shikayat karoon main Yeah bhi mujh ko gawara nahi hai |
To complain about friends is not something I can bear. |
Friends have been so kind, I no longer desire life. |
Think carefully before calling me faithless, lest your own honor be tarnished. |
| Aazmaya hai duniya ko main nay Aap ne mujh ko parkha nahi hai |
I have tested the world, but you have not tested me. |
| Ho mubarik tumahin saar juhkana Phir bhi itni guzarish karoon ga |
May you be blessed in bowing your head, but I still make this humble request. |
| Dil jhukana bhi lazim hain Zahid Sar jhukana he sajda nahi hai |
Oh ascetic, bending the heart is necessary too; bowing the head alone is not worship. |
| Ho ke betaab mayyat pe meri... | Growing restless at my bier... |
| Mayyat pa meri aya hain kya inqalab hai Wo benaqaab hain meray mou pa naqaab hai |
Revolution has arrived at my bier; they are unveiled while my face is shrouded. |
I’ve hidden myself in the shroud so as not to burden you with the veil. |
| Ho ke betaab mayyat pe meri Tum yeh kiyoon benaqaab aa gaye ho |
Growing restless at my bier, why have you arrived unveiled? |
| Umar bhar jiss say pardah kiya tha Aaj kiyoon us say pardah nahi hai |
From whom you veiled your face for a lifetime, why is there no veil today? |
| Aap hoon gay wafaoon ke Maail Aik din yeh haqiqat hai laikin |
You may become inclined to loyalty someday, though that is uncertain. |
I trust you, but not the certainty of life. |
| Zid na ker aaj to ghoont pe lay Zindagi chaar din ke hai je lay |
Don’t be stubborn; take a sip today, life is brief, so live. |
| Mohtasib apni qismat bana lay Maikada hai yeh Kaaba nahi hai |
Oh judge, make your own fate; this tavern is not the Kaaba. |
| O Husne jana aray tauba tauba.... | Oh, the beauty of my beloved, I am speechless.... |
| Shabaab aaya Kisi Bout per fida honay ka waqt aaya Meri dunya main banday k Khuda honay ka waqt aaya |
Youth arrived, it’s time to admire an idol, in my world, it’s time for man to become godlike. |
| Unhein dekha to zahid nai kaha, iman ki yeah hai Kay ub insaan woh sajda rawa honay ka waqt aaya |
Upon seeing them, the ascetic said, "Faith now lies in man; it’s time to bow in reverence." |
| Husne jana aray tauba tauba Jab Nighain outhi jhouk gai hain |
Oh, beloved’s beauty, I am speechless; my gaze rises and falls in awe. |
| Barha un ko dekha hai main nay Phir bhi jee bhar kay dekha nahi hai |
I have seen them often, yet have never gazed to my heart’s content. |
I reached their door, but don’t ask what I would do there....!! |
