| Kar rahi hai dar haqeeqat Kaam saaqi ki nazar |
The gaze of the cupbearer is truly doing all the work. |
| Maikaday main gardish-e-saagar bara-e-naam hai |
The passing around of goblets in the tavern is merely for show. |
| Phiroon dhoondta maikada? Tauba Tauba! |
I wander searching for the tavern? Oh, I repent! |
| Mujhe aaj kal itni fursat nahi hai |
I don’t have much time these days. |
| Salaamat rahay teri aankhon ki masti |
May the charm of your eyes remain forever. |
| Mujhe maikashi ki zaroorat nahi hai |
I don’t need intoxication anymore. |
| Salaamat rahain, teri aankhain! |
May your eyes remain blessed! |
| Saaqi teri aankhain, Salaamat rahain |
Cupbearer, may your eyes stay blessed. |
| Gila nahi jo guraizaan hain chand paimaanay |
I don’t complain if a few goblets are elusive. |
| Nigaah-e-yaar salaamat, hazaar maikhanay |
As long as the beloved's gaze is intact, a thousand taverns flourish. |
| Khanaktay jaam ka mohtaaj main nahi Saaqi! |
I am not dependent on the clinking goblet, oh cupbearer! |
| Teri nigaah salaamat mujhe kami kya hai |
With your gaze intact, what could I possibly lack? |
| Aankhain Saaqi ki salaamat, mere dushman tarsain |
May the cupbearer’s eyes stay blessed, while my enemies wither away. |
| Dohray maikhaanay hain neeyat meri marnay k liye |
I repeat the taverns, intending to die there. |
| Suroor cheez ki miqdaar par nhi moqoof |
My intoxication (suroor) should not stop (moqoof) because of the insufficient quantity (miqdaar) of the wine |
| Sharaab kam hai to saaqi nazar mila k pila |
If the amount of wine is insufficient, mix your gaze (which is also intoxicating like wine) with the wine and then serve it to me |
| Jaam par jaam peene se kya faida |
What’s the use of drinking cup after cup? |
| Raat guzri to saari utar jaye gi |
When the night passes, the intoxication will fade. |
| Teri nazron se pi hai khuda ki qasam |
By God, your gaze has intoxicated me. |
| Umr saari nashay main guzar jaye gi |
My entire life will pass in this intoxication. |
| Dil uska namaazi ban jaaye |
His heart will turn pious. |
| Aankh uski gulaabi ho jaaye |
His eyes will turn pink with love. |
| Tu jisko muhabbat se dekhay |
Whomever you gaze at with love, |
| Saaqi! Wo sharaabi ho jaye |
Oh cupbearer! That person will become a drunkard. |
| Ye tarq-e-Ta'aluq ka kya tazkarah hai? |
What is this talk of breaking ties? |
| Tumharay siwa koi apna nahi hai |
There is no one but you for me. |
| Agar tum kaho to main khud ko bhula doon |
If you ask, I will forget myself. |
| Tumhain bhool jaanay ki taaqat nahi hai |
But I don’t have the strength to forget you. |
| Roz kehta hun, bhool jaaun tumhain |
Every day I tell myself to forget you. |
| Roz ye baat bhool jaata hun |
But every day I forget that promise. |
| Ik baar tumhain Aqal ne chaaha tha bhulaana |
Once, reason tried to make me forget you. |
| So baar junoon ne teri tasweer dikha di |
But madness showed me your picture a hundred times. |
| Tujhko bhuloon? Koshish kar k dekhun ga |
Should I try to forget you? I will make the attempt. |
| Warna darya ulta behna muskhil hai |
Otherwise, it’s like trying to make a river flow backwards. |
| Har ik morr par, ik nayi Maat khaayi |
At every turn, I face a new defeat. |
| Rahi dil ki dil main, zubaan tak na aayi |
The words remained in the heart, never reaching the tongue. |
| Kiye hain kuch aisay karam doston ne |
Some friends have done such favors, |
| K ab dushmano ki zaroorat nahi hai |
That now, I don’t need any enemies. |
| Aqal ko rog maar dete hain |
They drive the mind into sickness. |
| Ishq ko sog maar dete hain |
They give love unbearable sorrow. |
| Aadmi khud-ba-khud nahi marta |
A person doesn’t die on their own. |
| Doosre log maar dete hain |
It’s others who kill them. |
| Hamesha mere saamnay se guzarna |
Always pass by me. |
| Nigaahain chura kar mujhe dekh lena |
Steal glances while looking at me. |
| Meri jaan tum mujhko itna bata do |
My love, just tell me one thing. |
| Ye kya cheez hai gar muhabbat nahi hai |
